Project Description:

Circulation with a View is located on a very narrow site (45' x 17') within the leafy Troy neighborhood surrounding Washington Park. The site falls between two important thoroughfares in Troy, the tree-lined main street next to the park, and the gritty alley to the east. These thoroughfares represent two aspects of Troy that are intimately connected yet worlds apart - the opulent Victorian high-street and the blue-collar service routes. Circulation with a View mediates between these two contrasting elements by having no front or back. All views from the house are considered equal. Circulation routes within the house are on the periphery and circle the living spaces. Furthermore, the circulation routes are all exposed emphasizing the connection between new and old, the opulent and the depressed, and the private and public.
